I was hired a couple of weeks back to cover my first NFL game, a match up between the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It started off as a surreal experience, but after a few minutes it was business as normal and I made some images I’m very happy with.

Here’s a quick slideshow from the game. Be sure to check it out in fullscreen mode! Also, you can check out these photos in a more traditional way on my PhotoShelter Archive.

Pretty lame football meets pretty awesome light

I love Rutgers home football games that start in the late afternoon and finish at night. There’s a magical moment there right around sun-down. The sun dips behind the upper-tier stands, casting the entire north endzone and sideline in shadow, while the field remains lit by the golden setting sunshine. You want to talk about subject isolation?

Rainy Day Football #s 6, 7 and 39

September 14th, 2009

Nikon D300, 17mm, ƒ/5.0, 1/500th, ISO 400

Freshmen were the stories of the day for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team in a rain-soaked Saturday match up against FBC (formerly Division 1-AA) opponent Howard. Combine a cupcake opponent, crummy weather and coming less than a week after a big blowout loss to a conference opponent and you’ve got a game that can be a blessing and a curse all at once.

American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix - Lime Rock Park

July 21st, 2009

Just a quick update to get something new up here. An overcast, threatening and rainy Friday gave way to a beautiful, mostly sunny blue sky for race day Saturday at Lime Rock Park race track in Connecticut. It’s the first time I’ve been out to shoot the American Le Mans Series sports cars and it truly is a premier race event. The cars are beautiful, colorful, sound excellent, and the crowd on Saturday was simply amazing, and I continue to be surprised with the great angles I’m able to find from the spectator side of the fence at Lime Rock. Here’s a quick photo gallery.

Shooting Six Hours from Spectator-land

June 10th, 2009

Merging my passion for motorsports with photography has been a whole new learning experience apart from the one that I went through for the stick-and-ball sports. I’ve been fortunate to have access and work for all kinds of sporting events at Rutgers through working for the school paper and other outlets for high school and collegiate sports. So I find myself working up my chops all over again for a whole new business, all over again.

For me, that’s meant getting out to races and, from the general admission spectator areas, making the best images I can think of. That challenge got a little steeper with my trip this weekend to Watkins Glen, New York, to the track named for the town. Beyond the historical significance of “The Glen” being the most successful host to the United States Formula 1 Grand Prix, it’s also where I first found my passion for car racing going to this same race (before its six-hour endurance format was revived in 1996, which I also attended. The Summer of Motorsports

May 26th, 2009

And we’re back! After an intense spring semester at school I’ve finally got time to get back to posting, so let’s get right to the pictures.

For me, this summer is a summer of car racing. I’m going to be getting to as many racing weekends in New York and Connecticut, as well as maybe a trip to Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. I’ll be attending as a spectator, trying to build up a set of racing images for my portfolio. My first trip of the summer was to Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, for the Road Racing Classic weekend, held on Memorial Day Weekend. It hosts a group of racing series all typically thought of as feeder series for the higher levels, but at Lime Rock the access is incredible for spectators and you can get right up along the track, as close credentialed photographers in many cases, making for some great work possibilities.

Loss to #1 UConn can’t dim senior celebration

March 6th, 2009

The Rutgers women’s basketball team said goodbye (sort of) to two very key senior players at the beginning of the week before their game against the #1 ranked Connecticut Huskies, their last regular season game. Although their likely NCAA tournament destination will be their own home court, serving as a regional first and second round site, there was still something special about finishing their regular career in a pretty extraordinary game. The game was never really close, but to be fair no one has been close to UConn this season, and the women kept their composure for the duration. Either way, it’s been a pleasure to watch center Kia Vaughn and forward Heather Zurich develop as players. This is the first graduating class I’ve covered for all four years, so it’s a sort of bittersweet feeling to see them go. It’s been a pleasure, and it’ll be fun to hopefully see Kia on to the WNBA next year.

“Who are the Scarlet Knights?”

February 24th, 2009

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights women’s basketball team of recent memory has been absent for most of this season, but it finally looks like they’re finding their stride and creating an identity. They defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 71-52 in Big East conference play tonight, winning comfortably and finding a few opportunities for their freshmen, who have struggled to find a comfort zone most of the season as well, to get in some good game experience and get some good looks.

Rutgers’ women back on track with 76-53 Big East victory…

January 18th, 2009

The #23 Rutgers Scarlet Knights women’s basketball team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles at the RAC to improve to 2-2 in the Big East.  It was easily the best performance the women have put in since the first half of their 55-51 loss to Tennessee at home and the lackluster showings in their first two Big East matchups, with four players in double figures for the first time since early in last year’s NCAA tournament.

Rutgers’ 20 point half-time lead evaporates in 55-51 loss

After being up 20 points and holding the vaunted Tennessee Lady Vols to the lowest first half points total in their program history (13), the Rutgers Scarlet Knights women’s basketball team ended their game by shooting a dismal 6 for 20 from the field in the second half to lose 55-51.  The loss ended the Scarlet Knights’ 20-game home winning streak and they had a hard time explaining exactly what went wrong after the break, but before they fell apart in the second, the first half was a whole lot of fun.
